Harris Photo Wins for Wilson
Award winning photographer Michael Wilson has once again combined with boxing and AFLW megastar Tayla Harris, winning the 2020 Women Sport Australia Photo Action Award.
This time in the boxing ring, Wilson documented Harris’ journey in the lead up to and on the night of her last fight against Janay Harding. The image above was captured as part of Wilson’s photo essay and went on to win the award.
You can find the full photo essay capturing Harris’ win to earn the Australian super welterweight title here.
Wilson and Harris have previously combined on the AFL field, with the photographer capturing the now infamous ‘Kick Photo’, for which he won the 2019 Gold Quill award.
The photo sparked the beginning of a national conversation surrounding the treatment of women in sport and online trolling and was immortalised as a bronze statue in 2019.
Harris was widely applauded for her response to the abuse and explained that it is in her nature to stand up against an attack.
“My human instinct is to speak up” she said,
“It’s not like me to step back and I guess that shows in my football and boxing.”
Congratulations to both Wilson and Harris on the new photo award, we look forward to seeing what this partnership creates in the future.
